About this checklist

Schengen visa applications from Pakistan go through the visa application centre (VFS Global, BLS or TLScontact depending on the country) and are decided by the consulate. The EU Visa Code sets the documents every applicant must provide; the consulate adds supporting documents for your purpose of visit and your situation; and in practice consulates in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore ask Pakistani applicants for a few extras. This checklist separates those three layers. Items without a tag are Visa Code requirements or standard supporting documents; items tagged verify are consulate practice or health rules you should confirm on the visa centre’s list for the country you apply to.

How to use it

  1. Choose your purpose of visit (tourism, visiting family or friends, business), your situation (employed, self-employed, student, retired) and whether children under 18 are travelling. The list filters itself.
  2. Tick each document as you obtain it. The progress bar counts only the items shown for your filters; ticks are saved in this browser.
  3. Before your appointment, download the official checklist from the visa centre for the specific country and compare it with yours; add anything it lists that this page does not.
  4. Print the list or save it as a PDF to take to the appointment.

How the list is built

  • Core documents come from the Visa Code: application form (Art. 11), passport validity rules (Art. 12), photo and biometrics (Art. 13), supporting documents on purpose, accommodation, means and intention to return (Art. 14 and Annex II), travel medical insurance (Art. 15) and the fee (Art. 16: EUR 90 adults, EUR 45 children 6–11, free under 6 since 11 June 2024).
  • Purpose and situation items are the standard supporting documents consulates list for each case: hotel bookings and an itinerary for tourism; an invitation and the host’s documents for visits; a company invitation and employer letter for business; employment, business, study or pension proof for ties to Pakistan.
  • Pakistan-specific items (NADRA FRC, income-tax returns, property papers, a notarised consent letter for minors, the polio vaccination certificate) are not in the Visa Code but appear on most visa centre lists for Pakistan or are checked at departure. They are tagged verify.

Example

A salaried applicant from Karachi applying at the Italian consulate for a 10-day tourist trip selects Tourism, Employed, No children. The list shows the Visa Code core (form, passport, photos, EUR 30,000 insurance, flight reservation, hotel bookings, bank statements, fee, biometrics), the tourism items (itinerary, hotel bookings for every night) and the employment items (employer letter with approved leave, salary slips), plus the verify-tagged extras: FRC, tax returns, property papers and the polio certificate. Running the policy through the insurance checker and the dates through the 90/180 calculator closes the two checks consulates make most often.

Frequently asked questions

Which country do I apply to if I visit several?

The country of your main destination, meaning the longest stay; if the stays are equal, the country you enter first (Visa Code Art. 5). Your insurance and bookings must cover the whole itinerary.

Do I need to buy the flight before applying?

No. A reservation or itinerary is enough for the application; most consulates advise not to buy a non-refundable ticket before the visa is granted. Some visa centres accept a travel agent’s booking printout.

What bank statement period do they want?

Typically the last three to six months, stamped by the bank, with a bank letter or account maintenance certificate. The amount they expect depends on the country’s published daily reference amount and your trip length (Visa Code Art. 21(5)); the consulate’s list states it.

Does the insurance have to be from a specific company?

No. It must meet Article 15: EUR 30,000 minimum, valid in all Schengen states, covering the whole stay, with emergency treatment and repatriation. UIC and Crescent Star Schengen plans meet this and issue a visa certificate; the checker tests any policy against the rule.

Why is the polio certificate on a visa checklist?

It is not a visa document; it is required for international travellers leaving Pakistan under WHO recommendations and is checked at the airport. It is on the list so it is not forgotten, tagged verify because the exact rule can change.

Limitations and sources

  • Consulates may request additional documents at any time (Visa Code Art. 21(8)); this list is a preparation aid, not the consulate’s checklist.
  • Formats (translations, attestations, notarisation) vary by consulate and are not specified here.
  • Ticks are stored in this browser only; nothing is sent to TravelConcern.
